Tanhau Jim Corbett National Park

Tanhau was born out of our desire to find peace away from the concrete jungles that our cities are in. It is a haven to enjoy nature & wildlife away from other tourists, in a manner that infringes the least on the surroundings. We are in a constant process of reforesting the property & the area to let the wilderness back in again. All construction has been done with locally available talent & materials, so we take a strange pride in our imperfect but wholly indigenous, low-impact developments. We think of Tanhau not just as a place or property, but more as a way of life – simple, peaceful & in harmony with nature. To reach Tanhau, the last four kilometers are along a jungle dirt track, of which the last kilometer was not even motorable till a couple of years ago. Located on top of a hill at an altitude of ~4,200 feet, Tanhau overlooks the reserve forests of Corbett Tiger Reserve & the winding Kosi River, & has arguably the most spectacular view in the Corbett area.

A very special place

Tanhau is a very special place. My son and I enjoyed every moment of our stay. Thank you Sunando for sharing your vision with us, Umaid for your kindness and all of the staff for their friendly attentiveness.
Some of the walks (hikes) are not for the fainthearted, but what a sense of achievement when you have done them.
The views are stunning and where else in India can you drink the sweetest purest tap water that you have ever tasted.

Fabulous homestay/jungle-stay

Located in the buffer area of the Jim Corbett, this is a great place, away from the maddening crowds near the tourist areas of the park. On the flip side, if you want to go for a safari or some place nearby the 4-5 kilometer drive from the property to the main road takes a good 30 minutes because of the treacherous approach road. If you are driving your own vehicle then make sure you get a 4 wheel drive with high ground clearance. Two wheel drives will struggle on some of the slippery inclines. Or you can get to the property on their vehicles easily.
We booked their 2 room cottage “Chukar” for 4 nights for our family. This cottage is very well done with a large sit-out area with great views of the Kosi river valley and has a very well stocked library. We wanted to just chill, hence we did just one safari and one trip to the river in 4 days. We went on morning walks and small hikes around the property. Never felt bored even for a moment. There is no TV but their internet was decent. Airtel/Jio mobile connectivity was patchy.

The owner, Sunando, is prompt in response, very helpful and knowledgeable. The staff are also polite and provide great service. The food is decent and varied.
One of the highlights for us was the gang 5 dogs they have, they are very friendly and quite playful during the morning walk.

This is a place worth going back again and again.

Hidden Gem: Tanhau is absolutely amazing!

This homestay is beyond Corbett on the mountain top with fabulous views of the Corbett reserve and the Kosi River on one side. And you can spot the snow covered Himalayas on the other side on a clear day a short walk away. It was a 6.5-7 hour drive (not including any stops) from Gurgaon to Tanhau for us. We stayed for 3 nights and left wishing we had planned for more! It's simple, very comfortable, located well inside from the main road and surrounded only by mountains and wilderness. Beautifully made overall and a lot of focus on sustainability (e.g. solar panels). Absolutely quiet at night and you can hear calls from the forest! We stayed at Bagh and I recommend a minimum stay of 3 nights for sure, ideally 4 to 5 :)

What to do: walks and hikes around during the day and early evening; Tapu, choti and godi (I hope I got the names right!) Some of the best views I've experienced in a while and the 5 dogs give you company throughout. Read a book, enjoy the dogs company, play board/card games and enjoy the sunset from the front courtyard of Bagh.

Food: All meals are home cooked since there is nothing around. Excellent food; not oily or overly spicy and yummm! Indian and continental options by Bhagat, the cook.

Thank you Sunando for your hospitality :) and thanks to the rest of the team; Subhash, Bhagat and the doggos; Neo, Wolfie, Bolt, Karma and Dollar. We'll hopefully be back soon!
